Wes Moore greets supporters on Election Night 2022 after defeating Republican Dan Cox to become the first African American elected Governor of Maryland.
On November 8th, 2022 Wes Moore became the first African American elected Governor of the state of Maryland. That was not the only first for Maryland in the 2022 election. Aruna Miller of Montgomery County was elected as the first South Asian woman elected Lieutenant Governor. Maryland voters also elected Brook Liermann as the first woman to hold the office of Comptroller and Anthony Brown as the first African American Attorney General in Maryland’s 234-year history.
Maryland elected the most diverse group of state-wide officeholders in its history. A group of candidates that more closely resembles the people it will serve.
Moore defeated his opponent, Republican Dan Cox, 62% to 34%. That was the largest margin of victory in the Maryland gubernatorial election since 1986. The Governor-Elect was joined on stage by his family and fellow election winners including incumbent Democrats Senator Chris Van Holling, US House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and US Representative Kweisi Mfume. Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, Adrienne A. Jones and Senate President Bill Ferguson also spoke to supporters.
